Five Stages, and the Aircraft Only Holds It for One

A door removal is a custody problem before it is a lifting problem. Each stage below names what is carrying the door’s weight — and the stages where the answer is “people” are the ones a fixture exists to remove.

S1 Airframe Unfastened, still hung
The door is still on its hinges — the only stage where the aircraft is carrying it.
Unchanged. The fixture is positioned and set before anything is released.
S2 Fixture Released from the hinge
Several crew take the weight by hand at the moment it comes free — the highest-risk instant in the task.
The cradle already carries the door before the last fastener is out.
S3 Fixture Moved clear of the gear bay
Carried by hand past the gear and the bay structure, with no way to set it down mid-move.
Rolled clear on the fixture, so the door never needs to be held to be moved.
S4 Fixture Held during the work
Laid on padding, trestles or whatever is available, at whatever height that gives.
Supported at working height on its own contour for as long as the task takes.
S5 Fixture Aligned and refitted
Lifted and nudged into alignment by hand while someone starts the fasteners.
Presented back to the hinge line by the fixture's geometry, so alignment is set before fastening.

The airframe carries the door for 1 of the 5 stages. Without a fixture, crew carry it for the other 4 — including the instant it comes free, which is where the risk and the damage both concentrate.
Why a fixture and not a stand

A stand carries a person. A fixture carries a part — and has to give it back in the same condition.

That changes what matters: the cradle has to match the door’s own contour, the geometry has to align the door back to its hinge line on refit, and nothing about it can mark a surface that flies. It is engineered to the part, which is why it belongs to one aircraft.
