A-10 maintenance access system

A-10 Aircraft Maintenance Access System

No commercial maintenance stand system met Nellis Air Force Base’s requirements. JE partnered directly with Air Force maintainers to design, manufacture, install and support a complete all-aluminum system built around the A-10 mission.

The challenge

Three Maintenance Zones, Worked at Once

Nellis needed safe elevated access, aircraft-specific fit, lightweight construction, and durability suited to a high-tempo training environment — with coverage across fuselage, wing, and engine maintenance zones simultaneously.
Access coverage // plan 3 ZONES
Plan view of an A-10 with five stand decks arranged around it: two fuselage stands, two wing stands and one engine stand. Together they cover the fuselage, both wing edges and both engines at once.

Constraint 01

No Commercial Option Existed

The customer needed a solution built specifically for the A-10, not adapted from another platform.

Constraint 02

High-Tempo Training Environment

As one of the Air Force’s premier training bases, Nellis required durability and operational flexibility under heavy use.

Constraint 03

Full-Aircraft Coverage Requirement

Safe access was needed across fuselage, wing, and engine maintenance zones simultaneously.

The solution

Three Stand Types, One System

JE worked directly with Nellis maintainers, supervisors, and stakeholders throughout the design process, then designed and manufactured a complete all-aluminum maintenance access system — fuselage stands, leading and trailing edge wing stands, and engine access stands — functioning as one integrated system rather than separate platforms.

Three stand types, each covering a maintenance zone

Zone 01

Fuselage Access Stands

Safe access to critical maintenance and inspection areas.

Zone 02

Leading & Trailing Edge Wing Stands

Efficient access to wing surfaces, flight controls, and associated systems.

Zone 03

Engine Access Stands

Safer, more efficient engine inspection and servicing.
Beyond manufacture
JE also supported full installation, configuration verification, operational readiness inspections, and hands-on maintainer training covering equipment operation, safe work practices, and platform movement — ensuring the system could be used safely from day one.

Operational impact

A Purpose-Built System Where No Commercial Alternative Existed

The finished system gave Nellis maintainers full-aircraft access built around real maintenance workflows developed in direct collaboration with base personnel — lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and durable enough for sustained training-base operations.

Nose to tail

Full Aircraft Coverage

Safe access to fuselage, wing, and engine maintenance areas.

Light to move

All-Aluminum Construction

Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, easy to maneuver.

Observed, not assumed

Improved Maintainer Productivity

Safe access to fuselage, wing, and engine maintenance areas.

Successful Installation & Training

Delivered, commissioned, and supported through hands-on training.
JE designed, manufactured, installed, and trained maintainers on a complete all-aluminum access system for a platform with no available commercial equivalent — demonstrating full lifecycle support from concept through operational training at an active USAF training base.

Technical & operational FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q01

Was this an existing product adapted for the A-10?

No — no commercial maintenance stand system met Nellis AFB’s requirements, so JE engineered the system specifically around the A-10 and its maintainers from the ground up.
Q02

Did JE provide training after delivery?

Yes — JE provided hands-on training covering equipment operation, safe work practices, platform movement, and inspection procedures to support successful adoption.
