Finish applied before the build closes

The Only Process Where the Air Is Part of the Specification

Everywhere else on this floor the constraint is geometry. In wet paint it is the environment — dust, humidity, temperature and time. Four stages, each with something that ruins it and something that keeps it out.

01 What ruins each stage

A Coating Fails Before It Is Applied

Almost every paint defect is traceable to something that was present before the gun was picked up, or to a clock that was not respected afterwards. Each stage has one thing that ruins it, and one thing that keeps that out.

Stage // what ruins it // what keeps it out 4 STAGES
Stage What ruins it What keeps it out
A1

Surface Preparation

Blast, clean and profile the substrate so the coating has something to hold on to.

Oil, mill scale and old coating left on the substrate
Blast and solvent wipe, verified before the part enters the booth
A2

Wet Paint

Spray application to the specified film thickness and colour.

Airborne dust, humidity and temperature outside the coating's window
Controlled booth conditions and application timed to them
A3

Assembly

Joining the finished parts into the delivered unit.

Handling marks on a film that is touch-dry but not cured
Assembly held until the cure window closes; protected handling after
A4

Quality Verification

Confirming film thickness, adhesion, coverage and appearance.

Cure state mistaken for finish quality at inspection
Inspection after full cure, never at touch-dry
The dependency that catches people out

Touch-dry is not cured, and a part that feels ready will mark under a gloved hand.

Which is why the cure window governs both assembly and final inspection on this page. Handling a part early puts marks on a finish that has already passed the booth, and inspecting early passes a film that has not finished hardening.

02 Finishes available

Wet Paint Is One of Seven Finishes

Wet paint is chosen when colour matching, touch-up in the field, or a coating specification calls for it. The other six are available on the same floor, and the right one follows from where the part lives.

F1 This page

Painted

Wet paint — colour match and field touch-up.

F2

Powder-coated

Harder film, no field touch-up.

F3

Galvanized

Outdoor and corrosive service.

F4

Polished

Appearance-critical stainless.

F5

Brushed

Directional finish, low glare.

F6

Bead-blasted

Uniform matte, good key.

F7

Smooth

Deburred, uncoated.

03 Six-stage project lifecycle

Finishing Sits Between Manufacture and Verification

Paint is applied at the end of stage three and has to survive stages four and five. Each stage produces something specific, and the approved scope decides which of them JE runs.

STAGE 01

Requirements & Site Assessment

Understanding the application, environment, and operational need before anything is drawn.

Produces: An agreed scope

STAGE 02

Design & Engineering

Developing a manufacturable solution around that scope.

Produces: Drawings and analysis

STAGE 03

Precision Manufacturing

Fabrication and finishing — surface preparation and wet paint sit at the end of this stage.

Produces: Finished, coated components

STAGE 04

Assembly & Quality Verification

Joining and inspecting, both governed by the cure window above.

Produces: A verified assembly

STAGE 05

Delivery & Deployment

Packaging and transport, protecting the finish in transit.

STAGE 06

Documentation & Support

Manuals, coating records and continued assistance after handover.

Produces: Records and support

04 Technical proof

Where Finish Decided the Job

Two programmes where the paint environment set the engineering, and one where the finish had to survive a part being handled repeatedly.

06 Technical & operational FAQ

Questions About Wet Paint &
Assembly

Q01

When is wet paint the right choice over powder coat?

Wet paint is chosen where colour matching to an existing specification matters, where field touch-up has to be possible, or where a coating specification calls for it directly. Powder coat gives a harder film but cannot be touched up in service.

Q02

Does JE assemble painted parts, or deliver them loose?

Both are normal. Where JE assembles, the build is held until the coating’s cure window has closed so that handling does not mark a finish that has already passed inspection.

Q03

What is verified on a painted assembly?

Film thickness, adhesion, coverage and appearance — inspected after full cure rather than at touch-dry, with records supplied as applicable to the approved scope.
